1931- Aviators Wiley Post and Harold Gatty take off from the Big Apple for the first round-the-world flight in a single engine plane.

1936- A new force of Transit Police starts patrolling the city’s subways. The force is eventually merged into the NYPD in 1995.

1992- “Dapper Don” John Gotti is sentenced to life in prison for murder and racketeering. He dies in jail of throat cancer ten years later.

1997- Dr. Betty Shabazz, the window of former Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X, dies from burns suffered in a fire set by her grandson three weeks earlier.
