1906: Famed architect Stanford White is shot to death in his apartment atop the second Madison Square Garden, which he had designed. He is killed by the jealous husband of his former lover, Evelyn Nesbitt.
1973: A Theater District landmark, the TKTS discount ticket booth, opens in Duffy Square.
1931- Aviators Wiley Post and Harold Gatty take off from the Big Apple for the first round-the-world flight in a single engine plane.
1936- A new force of Transit Police starts patrolling the city’s subways. The force is eventually merged into the NYPD in 1995.
1776- A British plot to murder George Washington is uncovered when his housekeeper, Phoebe Fraunces of the Fraunces Tavern family, warns the general that his meal has been poisoned.
1938- Heavyweight champion Joe Louis knocks out Max Schmeling in the first round of their rematch at Yankee Stadium.
